Syntax

61 × 61cms / 24 × 24”

Acrylic on canvas, 38mm deep box frame

2025

Commissioned by a writer, who expressed a preference for blue, and gave the word ‘syntax’ as a theme,  “Where colour evokes meaning while syntax structures meaning.” I thought about structure, hidden meaning, and deliberately breaking the structure. I have always appreciated writing where the reader is able to understand, or rather interpret, the writer’s intended meaning where the writer had not explicitly stated it. The idea behind the painting was to form a structure of columns representing paragraphs of text in a newsprint format, with an overlay that breaks the structure, and partially covers its to represent hidden meaning.
